On Jan. 12, 2021, Fr. Carter interviewed Dr. Jimmy Turner, Basilica parishioner and Chief Operations Officer of Chattanooga Community Kitchen. Dr. Turner talks about the causes of homelessness, ways you can best help the poor, the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, other agencies that provide a support network, and even answers the question about how to answer honestly when you are asked for cash. The full transcript of the interview can be found on the Basilica’s website along with Fr. Carter’s Pastor’s Notes for Jan. 24, Jan. 31, and Feb. 6, 2021, accessible at stspeterandpaulbasilica.com/pastors-notes
Due to changes in the tax laws, the parish has mailed 2020 contribution statements only to donors who contributed $5,000 or more. Bishop’s Appeal and Home Campaign contributions are not included. The Diocese will mail a separate statement. If you do not receive a statement and would like one, regardless of amount, contact the parish office at 423-266-1618. Thank you for your generous financial support.
The first phase of our parish “Under One Roof” capital campaign is off to a great start. We have composed a campaign prayer. We invite you to pray it to help invoke God’s blessings in this important project. You can find it in our bulletin, website, and also taped into our pews so that we can pray it together at Mass.
We are recruiting adult parishioners to join the Sacristan Ministry. If you are interested in training to serve as a Sacristan to set up the sanctuary for Mass, please contact Amy Long through the parish office or myParish app.

Dear Parishioners, A campaign planning study was recently conducted at Sts. Peter and Paul to assess the needs of the Basilica and prepare for a major fundraising initiative. Thank you to everyone who participated. Your feedback and insights were extremely valuable in determining our next course of action. I am happy to share this summary report which highlights the key study findings and recommendations for proceeding. (Click to view Fr. Carter's full report from the Planning Study...)
In Fr. Carter’s pastor’s notes for 11/29/20 and 12/6/20, you’ll find instructions about the proper use of a personal hand corporal, as a reverent way to receive the Sacred Host without touching it with your hand. We have a limited number of these hand corporals available in the vestibule for a suggested donation of $1. Or you may also bring a similar cloth of your own.
Pope Francis has called for a Year of St. Joseph beginning Dec. 8, 2020, “in which all faithful, after his example, may daily reinforce their own life of faith in complete fulfillment of God’s will.” Through the Apostolic Penitentiary the Holy Father has extended a series of plenary indulgences centered around devotion to St. Joseph. Click for more information and practical ways to celebrate the Year of St. Joseph. And stay tuned for updates during the year.
St. Vincent de Paul Society is a lay Catholic ministry that promotes the spiritual growth of its members through service to the poor. Their food pantry at OLPH is always in need of restocking and is now in most need of: peanut butter, jelly, canned chicken, dried beans, rice, soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables. Place food items in the basket in our Basilica vestibule for our next food drive on Jan. 23-24. Click for more information.
The Deacon’s Table is now having a virtual meeting every Sunday at 5pm. If you are not already signed up with Dcn. Tom, please contact him to receive the notifications. Wow! What a great session we enjoyed yesterday: “Holy Thursday Through Jewish Eyes”. Between Dr. Bergsma and The Deacon’s Table, we turned the discussion into a three-fold perspective: “Holy Thursday Through Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant Eyes!” Great fun and very inciteful. That finishes the 4th DVD and the 8th session of Dr. Bergsma’s “The Jewish Roots of Jesus and the Church…Light from the Dead Sea Scrolls”. Don’t worry if you’ve missed any of the sessions…they pretty much stand alone. We are learning so much about the history of the Church through the Essenes who kept the Dead Sea Scrolls and their own Rules of the Order that enlighten the Holy Scriptures, especially the Gospels. I strongly encourage you to make the 5-6pm timeframe on Sundays a priority…you’ll not regret doing so. Even the sociability of our virtual sessions are a joy! So, please tune in this Sunday, 5-6pm, as we start the 5th DVD which will present “The Scrolls and Celibacy” followed by “The Scrolls and Marriage”. I will email everyone the invitation to the WebEx link later this week. God bless you! Deacon Tom
