Obituary
Ann Fox Miller was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 24, 1933, to the Rev. William Ernest Fox and Ruth Anna Mathaney Fox. She was first raised in Florida and then in Mississippi until her family returned to Maryland after World War II, in which her father had served in the Army Air Force. After receiving degrees from Goucher College and Bryn Mawr College and studying in Italy, Ann taught in Philadelphia and then in Anglican mission schools in the Philippines. For the rest of her life, she remained close to her former students in northern Luzon and often returned there, where she helped found a women’s cooperative. After returning from the Philippines and graduating from Boston College Law School, she practiced law in Pennsylvania and later in Maryland, where she lived on the Eastern Shore. Upon her marriage to Stephen R. Miller, she joined her husband in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. After his death in 1993, she returned to the Eastern Shore, where she volunteered in local activities and felt especially privileged to be among the many laity who assist the Little Sisters of Jesus and Mary in their service to the poor on the Lower Eastern Shore. She moved to Alexian Village on Signal Mountain, Tennessee, in late 2013, and at her death was a grateful member of the parish of St. Augustine’s, Signal Mountain.
Ann was preceded in death by her brother, Harry Mathaney Fox, and sister, Susan Mary Fox. She is survived by two sisters, Clare Fox Archer and Ruth A. Fox; nephew and niece Stephen Fox and Caitlynne Fox; cousins Mary Haas, Nancy Hartman, and Richard Johnson; and her foster daughter Valentina Batawig Attolba and family, of Tabuk, the Philippines. Her close friends from the Eastern Shore, Signal Mountain, and Chattanooga include especially Judith Ann Kelly, Julie Huck Bedell, Christian and Lillian Bruce, and Christopher and Debra Conn. Several dear people helped Ann continually during her last illness: Laszlo & Susan Kelloes, Mechtild Boles, Judy Walker, Eva Catherine Bennett, and loving caregivers Lillie Joyner & Madia Brown.
